Ethiopian Forces Capture Mehki Airport and Enter Tigray
Ethiopian forces, supported by the federal government, regained control of Mekelle Airport in the Tigray region and entered the city after rebel forces withdrew. The Tigray Peace Force stated that full control of the airport has been restored and that they are now conducting a sweep of the city. A government official confirmed that the army is now in control of the regional capital and is aiming to take control of the remaining towns. These developments represent a significant setback for the rebel alliance led by the Tigray People's Liberation Front, amid ongoing fighting for several weeks and military and security tensions that suggest a potential escalation of the civil war in northern Ethiopia. The conflict has resulted in approximately 600,000 deaths and has deteriorated relations with Egypt and Eritrea.
