US Sea Operations: Death or Prison
The article addresses widespread human rights violations carried out by American forces during maritime operations near Ecuador. These included beating, kicking, and restraining fishermen, covering the eyes of some, and depriving them of food and water. Additionally, they threatened them with imprisonment and pursued their families if they refused to admit to unsubstantiated charges. Between August 28 and September 16, American forces destroyed eight Ecuadorian fishing boats and detained over 140 individuals, claiming that the boats were involved in drug smuggling. However, the publicly available evidence did not substantiate these claims, and the charges against the crew members are not based on clear proof. Legally, Ecuadorian courts have shown that many of those detained should have been released due to the lack of evidence linking them to any crimes. The human rights organization Human Rights Watch calls on Washington and Quito to disclose the legal basis for these operations, review detention procedures, and examine how the forces have treated those in custody.
