France confronts third strike over student hand amputation
Student protests in France have been escalating since September 2023, transforming into a national crisis amid police violence and students suffering serious injuries, including a 15-year-old who lost his hand after a hand grenade thrown by security forces exploded. The widespread use of tear gas and rubber bullets has caused most of the injuries, along with extensive arrests—around 1,949 arrests were recorded on Thursday alone. The demonstrations focus on the deteriorating conditions in education, leading to the closure of between 400 and 500 schools and resulting in vandalism and fires. There are calls for accountability regarding the violence and an end to the use of oppressive weapons. The government responded by refusing to classify these events as union disputes, instead declaring them as urban violence, amidst growing criticism over the excessive use of force against youth.
