Supreme Court lifts Catalan leader's arrest warrant
The Spanish Supreme Court has overturned the arrest warrant for former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, who has been living in exile in Belgium since 2017. This paves the way for his return to the country ahead of the upcoming national elections scheduled for November 29. The decision followed a ruling by the Spanish Constitutional Court that ordered the application of an amnesty law for Catalonian separatists, including provisions related to embezzlement. This comes in the context of charges against him for embezzling funds to organize an illegal independence referendum in 2017. The Constitutional Court upheld an appeal against a ruling denying the application of the amnesty law to the embezzlement offense, allowing Puigdemont to come to Spain without being arrested.
