Israel faces worsening mental health after October 7
Following the October 7, 2023 attacks, Israel is facing an unprecedented mental health crisis, with approximately 39% of the population experiencing symptoms of mental disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety—about three million people, including 600,000 with severe cases. Despite increased funding, treatment wait times still exceed six months, and mental health workers are under immense pressure, with widespread use of prescribed medications and related issues like alcohol and drug addiction. There has also been a sharp rise in suicide cases among reserves soldiers, from just one annually before the attack to 11 in 2024, and nine cases are under investigation in 2025. It is advised to take measures to bolster support and invest in the mental health system, with a particular focus on breaking the stigma surrounding suicide, especially among the strong.
