Rubio's Greece Visit: Energy Ties and Protests
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Greece to strengthen the strategic relationship between the two countries and to reaffirm Greece's importance as a key ally of the United States amid global challenges, including the situations in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. The visit included a speech from Pinnacles Hill near the Acropolis, where he called for the revival of Western spirit and solidarity to confront the decline of civilization, emphasizing the importance of defending shared heritage in the face of international challenges. The two sides also discussed enhancing security cooperation, particularly within NATO, and Greece's role as an important hub for natural gas transit in Southeastern Europe. Public protests against the visit erupted amid concerns over conflicting interests linked to the American ambassador in Greece, especially following oil and investment agreements signed between the two countries related to energy resource exploitation.
