South Korea considers limiting athlete military exemptions
South Korean authorities are planning to reduce the military exemption system granted to elite athletes, following public criticism that they were given exemptions after winning gold medals at the Asian Games. Typically, gold medalists receive partial exemptions from mandatory military service, which lasts between 18 months and two years, sparking significant controversy after football players celebrated their victories and some made statements, including the team captain saying he wouldn't go to the army. Officials announced plans to implement more fair and strict regulations for the system, as the government seeks to gradually cut back on exemptions and eventually eliminate them entirely, given the sensitive nature of the issue in the country.
