Ancient Marine Predator Discovered
The Sphinx Crocodile is the name of an ancient tomb linked to a new species of crocodile that may be scientifically called "Herugavialis cairensis." This species dates back approximately 45 million years and lived in the Egypt region during the Eocene era. Computed tomography was used to examine a hole that is about a century old, and differences in skull structure compared to known crocodile species were discovered, leading to its classification as a separate species. The fossil indicates that this crocodile had a long and narrow snout, similar to the Great Sphinx statue, which is why the species was named in honor of the Egyptian god Horus. It is believed that climate changes and a drop in sea levels later caused its range to diminish. The research suggests that the diversity of ancient crocodiles was much greater in earlier times and that environmental changes contributed to their disappearance from the Mediterranean region.
