Tunisian prisons are witnessing an increase in the use of hunger strikes as a means of protest against detention conditions and human rights violations, especially among political prisoners. This form of sacrifice remains one of the last available methods for detainees to express their rejection of their circumstances, with some striking prisoners reaching dangerous levels of health risk. Despite a decline in their impact compared to the past, these strikes serve as a pressure tool that could influence authorities. While they highlight the internal suffering of prisoners, they currently face weak popular and governmental responses, having shifted more into symbolic acts rather than an effective means of protest, amid rising health risks for the strikers.
