UN warns US over airing execution
The United Nations has confirmed that the United States' decision to broadcast live the execution of Nidal Hassan, who was convicted of killing 13 people at a military base in 2009, constitutes a violation of the ban on torture and is equivalent to a public execution, representing cruel treatment and considered a form of torture. This execution, the first of its kind since 1961 and the first shooting death since World War II, has sparked widespread international criticism, especially given that there were 17 public executions recorded last year in Iran and Afghanistan.
