U.S. sanctions ICC amid Court response
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump imposed broad sanctions on the International Criminal Court, aiming to undermine its role and halt its investigations into Americans and Israelis accused of committing war crimes. It considered the court to be politicized and illegal. This came after South African Judge Navi Pillay was announced as the Nobel Peace Prize laureate; she had overseen investigations against American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. The court responded to the sanctions by deeming them an attack on the rule of law, affirming that this step violates the foundation of the international legal system and constitutes an unlawful overreach.
