Palestinian president announces elections for September 2027
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has issued a presidential decree calling for simultaneous presidential and legislative elections scheduled for September 11, 2027. This comes after the cancellation of the previous decree and the setting of a new date due to security and political challenges imposed by Israel on Palestinian territories, including Jerusalem and Gaza. The decision responds to national consultations and aims to address obstacles that prevented holding elections on the original date, such as Israeli restrictions on the movement of election committees, security conditions, and the humanitarian situation in Gaza. The decree seeks to strengthen national unity and ensure full participation for all Palestinians, tasking the Central Election Commission with organizing procedures to guarantee free and fair elections across all Palestinian territories.
