Algeria-Spain Relations Tense
A Spanish national court has denied Algeria's request to extradite Algerian businessman Ayoub Aisiou, who was convicted in absentia and sentenced to 20 years in prison for corruption and money laundering. The prosecution confirmed that some of the crimes upon which Algeria relied have expired due to statutes of limitations, and that there is insufficient evidence to establish a charge of money laundering, which supports the court's decision not to extradite him. Aisiou, who has been detained in Spain since July 2023, considers the extradition request to be political. The court is currently postponing the final decision. The rejection has sparked diplomatic tensions between Madrid and Algiers, especially as an upcoming summit between the two countries has been delayed in what is seen as an attempt to avoid escalating tensions with Morocco.
