Indonesia Fires Endanger The Jungle Man
Under the influence of wildfires sweeping through parts of Borneo and Indonesia in general, the endangered orangutans are at risk as the number of injured, stranded, or trapped animals increases. Several animals have been rescued, including a female orangutan named "Novita," who was clinging to a tree in Central Kalimantan after sustaining burns, and has been transferred to a rehabilitation center. The escalation of the fires is a result of the El Niño phenomenon and extended dry seasons, with firefighting efforts hampered by water shortages, amid international support to assist Indonesia in reducing these fires and saving the threatened animals.
