Twin Study Reassesses Screen Time and Teen Depression
A study of over 21,000 Swedish twins suggests that the relationship between screen time and depression in adolescents is not as direct as previously believed. After accounting for genetic factors and family background, the significance of screen use as a main cause diminishes. While increases in depressive symptoms were clearly linked to more time spent on devices during adolescence—particularly through gaming, chatting, and browsing—the impact of screens becomes less prominent once genetic and environmental influences are considered. The findings indicate that genetic and family factors explain a large part of the association between screen time and mental health, with only a small remaining link between heavy use and symptoms. Therefore, the effect of screens on depression is not a direct cause but part of a complex interplay involving inherited traits and family environment.
