Refugee Agency Warns of Funding Gaps
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is facing a severe funding crisis in 2026, having secured only 35% of its needs amounting to $8.5 billion. This shortfall forces it to reduce humanitarian operations worldwide and cut its staff from 20,000 to fewer than 12,000. The funding shortage threatens refugee protection programs, such as healthcare and legal assistance, especially in regions like Chad and Ethiopia. It is also expected that budgets in areas such as the Americas will decrease by 32%, amid rising numbers of forced displacements. The UNHCR warns that the lack of funding directly impacts the delivery of essential services and limits the organization's ability to respond to humanitarian crises.
