The European Union Foreign Ministers announced the establishment of a new mission to support Lebanon, initially lasting three years, with the aim of enhancing the country's stability and helping its institutions to regain full sovereignty. This step comes in the context of the end of the UNIFIL mission's mandate at the end of 2026, which will be followed by a gradual withdrawal of troops. The support aims to strengthen the capabilities of the Lebanese Army, particularly in border security and water domains, as well as to assist internal security forces through training and consultations, focusing on combating smuggling, cyber crimes, and improving port governance. The Lebanese Armed Forces face ongoing challenges, including funding shortages and difficulties in completing their deployment in southern Lebanon, despite a framework agreement brokered by Washington between Lebanon and Israel. The agreement calls for the disarmament of Hezbollah and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied areas, amidst continued military tensions in the region.
