Thousands demonstrated in New Delhi demanding the resignation of the Election Commission head, protesting the review of voter lists that led to the deletion of over 133 million names, most of them from minority groups. Critics saw this as an attempt by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party to strengthen its political control at the expense of Indian democracy. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi led the march calling for the halt of this review, during which many protesters were detained, and the courts blocked opposition petitions. These are the largest protests since Modi came to power 12 years ago and indicate growing political tension over the integrity of the electoral process and its impact on minorities.
