Bolivia probes Evo Morales in Europes' deaths
Bolivia has confirmed the opening of an investigation against former President Evo Morales on charges related to the killing and torture of European citizens in 2009. This comes 17 years after an incident when security forces raided a hotel in Santa Cruz, killing three people—including Eduardo Rosa Flores, Irish national Michael Dwyer, and Hungarian Arpad Madiaroshi—while two others survived after being subjected to torture. The announcement of the investigation was made following a complaint from right-wing legislators and aims to gather evidence against Morales and his former vice president. At the time, Morales was in hiding due to two pending arrest warrants—one linked to widespread protests and the other to accusations of child trafficking. Morales’s administration then claimed that the victims were mercenaries threatening national unity, but the International Human Rights Committee stated that the government violated individuals’ rights. Morales has not commented on the current allegations.
