Brussels disputes Moscow's numbers on EU fuel spending
The European Union continues to import fossil fuels from Russia, having spent approximately $209 billion on Russian gas and oil imports from the start of the war in Ukraine until July 2026, despite efforts to diversify and reduce dependence. During this period, Russia's share of gas imports declined from 45% in 2021 to 12% in 2025, with Russian liquefied natural gas still being imported, although Europeans aim to phase out Russian imports by fall 2027. The figures show that European policies have led to a reduction in the energy bill by 278 billion euros, despite ongoing economic and political tensions with Moscow.
