Spanish King Visits Ceuta Amid Morocco Tensions
The visit made by King Felipe VI of Spain to the city of Ceuta concerns the crisis the city experienced following the influx of over 70,000 migrants from Morocco in July, and the subsequent efforts to strengthen the state's presence and support the city's residents. This visit, which is the first in nearly 15 years, aims to reaffirm Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla, reduce tensions related to the Moroccan stance, honor the victims of migration, and promote national unity. The city is currently experiencing a state of tension, with makeshift migrant camps and protests from residents who express their fears and demand the defense of Ceuta as part of Spain. The royal movements reflect an attempt to calm the situation and send a strong message regarding Spain's sovereignty over Ceuta, especially given the crisis's impact on upcoming elections and diplomatic tensions with Morocco.
