Berlin ruling coalition faces internal disputes
The article addresses the political challenges faced by Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his current German government, especially amidst disagreements within the ruling coalition between the Social Democratic Party and the Christian Union. The most prominent issues involve the resignation of former Labor Minister Barbel Bas and the tensions that arose due to mutual accusations over how she handled her personal circumstances, reflecting a crisis of trust within the government. The articles also discuss disagreements over critical reform files, such as the pension system, taxes, the difficulty of passing the 2027 budget, preparations for leadership elections within the party, and the potential for crises in Berlin following the election of county leaders or the formation of new coalitions—all of which threaten the stability of the government and Merz's future in office if tangible results are not achieved.
