Cairo and Amsterdam Diplomatic Tensions Over Embassy Protests
The article concerns diplomatic tensions between Egypt and the Netherlands following the detention of activist Ahmed Nasser, vice president of the Egyptian Youth Union Abroad, and his colleague as they were heading to participate in a pro-government demonstration outside the Egyptian embassy in The Hague. Egypt has called for a swift clarification of the circumstances surrounding their detention and their immediate release. It considers that the detention threatens diplomatic immunity and human rights. Meanwhile, Egyptian protests have taken place in front of the Egyptian embassy in Cairo, demanding their release. Egyptian sources confirmed that the detention raises concerns about restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly, and that the Egyptian government has taken diplomatic steps to follow up on the case. They also described the Dutch procedures as lacking transparency and contradicting international human rights principles.
