Algeria Restores Death Penalty for Fires and Kidnapping
Algeria has officially activated the death penalty for crimes related to forest fires and child kidnapping, following the parliament's approval of new amendments, in order to deter these offenses which cause human and material losses. The death penalty applies to those who intentionally set fires to forests or trees, particularly when the acts threaten national security and public order, as well as to those who incite or contribute to such acts, including through social media platforms. Additionally, the amendments specify the death penalty for those who kidnap, torture, or sexually assault a child, with a ban on benefiting from mitigating circumstances. This came following directives from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune amid widespread fires that have caused significant damage, especially in the eastern regions.
