Global urban land loss slowing, study finds
A Chinese study reveals that land subsidence worldwide varies significantly between cities, but it has generally been slowing in recent years. The subsidence was assessed in 465 cities across the globe between 2014 and 2023, with the most severe cases found in Southeast Asia, the western parts of Central Asia, and North America, including cities like Mexico City, Tolucca, and Indonesia, where the rate of decline exceeded 0.2 meters per year in Mexico City. Studies showed that water management measures—such as water diversion projects and improved groundwater management—have contributed to reducing and slowing down the phenomenon in certain regions, particularly in China. The development of a global land subsidence database has enabled the use of artificial intelligence to analyze causes and evaluate risks more accurately.
