S Korea seeks 30-year term for Yoon
The South Korean prosecution team has filed an appeal against the 30-year prison sentence handed down to former President Yoon Suk-yeol, accusing him of treason related to the alleged sending of secret drones over Pyongyang in October 2024 with the intent to provoke North Korea. The appeal aims to overturn the previous lower court rulings issued against him in February. Yoon is accused of ordering the drones to infiltrate Pyongyang in an attempt to justify the declaration of martial law, which his forces announced and then the National Assembly canceled after a few hours. Yoon was previously sentenced to life imprisonment in February for his involvement in the rebellion case and the declaration of martial law. He is currently in detention and is considered the first South Korean president to be imprisoned on charges of rebellion.
