Measles Cases Rise in US with Pennsylvania Impact
The United States recorded over 4,400 confirmed cases of measles in 2026, with a widespread outbreak emerging in Pennsylvania, where 1,260 cases have been confirmed to date. This includes 238 hospitalizations and 5 related deaths. Data indicate that 96% of cases occurred among unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown vaccination status. Children and adolescents aged 5 to 19 are the most affected, with 1,856 cases (42%) among this group. Urgent action is required; experts from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have assigned a specialist to assist in controlling the outbreak. Recommendations emphasize the importance of receiving two doses of the measles vaccine to reduce the spread of the disease. The measles outbreak in the state is the largest since 1991 and threatens to set record numbers for 2026.
