French police detain hundreds over riots
On Saturday, Paris and several other French cities witnessed widespread protests against rising living costs, which led to riots, vandalism, and destructive looting. The protests resulted in the arrest of 855 people, a record high, and caused damage to hundreds of businesses and stores, with organized groups carrying out looting operations supported by the disablement of surveillance cameras. The violence destroyed entire streets, damaged public buildings, and wrecked numerous vehicles, while 150 security personnel were injured. Additionally, a large part of the Limoges Town Hall was set ablaze. President Macron pledged to pursue and punish the perpetrators, while the government stated that the events were more severe than previous protests, amid growing social tensions six months before the upcoming presidential elections.
