French Interior Minister Resigns Amid Protest Chaos
France experienced a surge in violence over the weekend, with widespread protests that escalated into looting and vandalism, resulting in approximately 2,400 arrests and around a thousand security personnel injuries. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez submitted his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron, but it was rejected due to the need to continue leading the security forces. There was acknowledgment of shortcomings in intelligence gathering and preemptive action. Macron recommended developing new operational methods for security forces to confront the vandals, as part of an effort to contain the political crisis that has led to a decline in public trust in authorities—especially since the protests initially related to the cost of living but escalated into unprecedented violence. The German Foreign Ministry warned its citizens in France about the potential escalation of protests and riots, advising caution and urging compliance with security forces’ instructions.
