Israel arrests 40 "Heridy" draft dodgers
A political crisis erupted in Israel after more than 40 Haredi community youths, who had avoided military service, were detained upon their return from New York. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the arrests as unacceptable and emphasized the need to enforce the conscription law on all citizens. Netanyahu faced fierce criticism from his opponents, who accused him of making a political deal with Haredi parties to stay in power. This issue threatens to undermine the stability of the government, especially amid escalating protests from the Haredi community, which opposes the conscription policies. Israel is under legal and political pressure regarding the conscription of Haredim, who constitute about 13% of the population. The divisions among political parties have deepened, with opposition parties warning of strict measures against any political interference in the conscription matter.
