Iran Women Face Honor-Linked Hazards
Maryam Yar Mohammadí, the 28-year-old Iranian woman and mother of two children, was found dead at the hands of her brother, in collusion with her husband, on Qeshm Island. She was brutally stabbed and her body was mutilated, leading to her death in the hospital. This crime is considered one of the honor killings, in which women are murdered under the presumed motive of "honor cleansing" following a violation of family or social norms. Often, such acts are carried out without the victim having the chance to defend herself. Reports indicate that these types of crimes account for about 45% of murders in some conservative regions of Iran, with at least 179 women killed by family members in 2024 alone. These incidents reflect the persistence of traditional cultural norms and an underregulated judicial system, highlighting the urgent need to support women and raise societal awareness about women's rights, despite ongoing challenges and oppressive laws.
