UK report highlights Arctic defense gaps
The British Parliamentary Report highlights clear gaps in the United Kingdom's naval military capabilities to confront Russian threats in the "High North" region of the Arctic. It notes increasing Russian activities, including the passage of military-sized fishing vessels, as well as a decline in the readiness of British ships and submarines—particularly those capable of operating beneath the ice. The report emphasizes the need to strengthen the deployment of anti-submarine frigates, amphibious ships, and to address the current deficiencies, as existing capabilities are insufficient to counter Russia's growing threats to Britain and NATO. It also warns of potential attacks on pipelines and undersea cables. The report urges the British government to develop a plan to address these gaps by 2030, enhance naval forces' capabilities, and tighten legislation to protect critical infrastructure amid escalating tensions with Russia in this strategic region.
