Tunisian Black Fly Factory Sparks Outrage
A large fire destroyed the entire black fly production factory at Bouslava House in Tunis, following weeks of local protests and sit-ins due to concerns about the factory’s use. The fire occurred last night, and authorities are investigating its causes and the circumstances surrounding its ignition. Meanwhile, the deputy confirms that the closure decision was supposed to be fully implemented before the fire. The protests had escalated due to the factory’s proximity to residential areas, healthcare facilities, and schools, and the death of a citizen who participated in the sit-in has further complicated the issue. Official sources indicated that orders had been issued to shut down the factory and revoke its licenses, but these had not been enforced, leading to deteriorating conditions and sporadic clashes. The fire reflects ongoing tensions over the exploitation of industrial facilities involved in fly breeding, amid upcoming discussions of a new law regulating these activities and setting licensing conditions. The controversy revolves around the legality of the factory’s operation and the authorities' handling of the protests.
