Baghdad worries factions may engage in US-Iran conflict
The Iraqi government faces a challenge in achieving the goal of restricting arms to the state, amid increasing fears of a renewed confrontation between the United States and Iran, with the possibility of armed factions loyal to Iran intervening. A phased plan has been proposed, which calls for a ceasefire for 90 days, starting with factions refraining from attacking American interests and neighboring countries. This would be followed by a gradual surrender of weapons over six months. However, disagreements over the mechanisms for implementation remain. Statements from factions and their alliances with Iran are a source of concern, especially since some factions base their decisions on Iranian calculations, complicating the government's efforts and paving the way for a potential confrontation that could lead to military escalation, threatening Iraqi sovereignty and placing the country in the midst of regional confrontations.
