Pregnancy Gaps and Aging
A hypothesis proposed by researchers at Harvard Medical School suggests that closely spaced pregnancies may limit the body’s recovery between pregnancies and could lead to an accumulation of changes associated with biological aging. However, any long-term effect on aging has not been established. In a study of more than 300,000 pregnancies, about half of the laboratory markers took three months to a year to return to pre-pregnancy levels. Another study, which followed 130 women for nearly four years after childbirth, linked a subsequent pregnancy to a halt in the decline of one measure of aging. The World Health Organization recommends waiting 24 months after a live birth before trying to conceive again for maternal and child health reasons—not because there is evidence that this slows aging.
