Turkey is seeking to expand its land trade corridors through Iraq and Syria with the aim of linking Gulf ports to European markets, taking advantage of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the halt in navigation there. The projects include the construction of a network of railways and roads extending over 1,200 kilometers, with costs estimated in the tens of billions of dollars. The "Development Road" in Iraq is among the most prominent of these initiatives. Despite the ambitions, these projects face financial and security challenges and will require many years to complete, while maritime transport through the strait remains relatively efficient and less costly.
