Theft of Yemeni relics reaches Himyarite capital
The article addresses the escalating theft and vandalism of archaeological sites in Yemen, particularly in areas controlled by the Houthis. Unauthorized digging and the seizure of antiquities have been discovered in regions such as Dhofar and Ibb. The decline in security measures and the absence of decisive actions have led to a surge in the smuggling of artifacts, with over twenty thousand pieces having been stolen and exported in recent years. Reports highlight official negligence and neglect in protecting Yemen’s national heritage. Scholars and media personnel are calling for urgent measures to preserve these historic sites, especially as the condition of ancient temples and tombs, such as the Owaam Temple and the Queen of Sheba’s throne in Marib, continues to deteriorate. They emphasize that these sites are an important part of Yemen’s cultural identity and human heritage.
