Iran flag controversy heats up
The 2026 World Cup management faces a legal battle ahead of the Iran vs. New Zealand match, as an American organization has filed lawsuits to prevent FIFA from banning the display of the Iranian flag prior to the 1979 Revolution in stadiums. There are concerns that this ruling could impact all of Iran's matches in the tournament. The controversy centers around the symbolism of the flag, which features the yellow lion and sun emblem associated with the former regime, and is considered political and in violation of FIFA regulations. The court continues to review the case just hours before the match begins, which could alter the rules regarding the display of flags during the tournament.
