An international study led by Italy has revealed the presence of antibiotic resistance genes in the world's oceans, including remote areas far from coastlines and populations. Higher levels were recorded near busy shipping routes and among sailors. The results showed that the oceans contribute to transporting pollution from land, carrying traces of antibiotic use, wastewater, and other contaminated substances. They also contain microplastics, persistent chemicals, and RNA from the "SARS-CoV-2" virus. Researchers affirmed that the oceans serve as an early warning system for global health risks by monitoring the accumulation of these pollutants.
