German police have deployed thousands of officers across the country ahead of large-scale protests expected on Saturday, while stores have boarded up their windows in anticipation of looting. The “Gen Z Regelt” movement expects more than 170,000 people to take part in protests in over 30 cities, including Berlin, Frankfurt and Cologne, to voice their dissatisfaction with the high cost of living, worsening conditions at some schools and budget cuts. The movement has stressed that it rejects violence.
