New Delhi topped the list of the world’s most polluted major cities on Saturday morning, ahead of Diwali celebrations scheduled for Sunday. Its air quality index reached 581, according to IQAir, compared with 285 in Lahore. India’s Central Pollution Control Board said Delhi’s official index stood at 363, in the “very poor” category. Authorities recommended remote learning and working from home to limit exposure to pollutants and reduce travel ahead of celebrations that typically involve heavy use of fireworks.
