Long Island to cover higher SNAP costs
Changes to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will lead to increased costs for Nassau and Suffolk counties, totaling nearly $10 million, as they implement new eligibility and administrative requirements. Starting October 1, Suffolk will spend $5.8 million, and Nassau will spend $4.1 million to support the program, with additional future costs expected. The updates include stricter work requirements and increased penalties for states with high benefit error rates, which could result in significant expenses for New York, potentially exceeding a billion dollars. While benefits for recipients are set to increase with the cost-of-living adjustment, critics warn that these changes may make it harder for some individuals to access food assistance.
