Rising STI struggles despite treatment

The article discusses the increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant Shigella infections, a highly contagious gastrointestinal bacteria that can spread through contaminated food, water, hygiene, and sexual contact. Recent CDC data shows a rise in extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains, which now account for 8.5% of samples in 2023, making treatment more challenging as no FDA-approved oral antibiotics exist for these strains. Most cases involve adult men, particularly those with HIV, and transmission often occurs through sexual activity, though infections are not classified as traditional sexually transmitted infections. Health officials emphasize the importance of hygiene, safe sex practices, and seeking medical advice if infected, as the resistance trend poses a growing public health concern.
