Potential E-Rate cuts for Long Island schools

Education advocates on Long Island oppose the FCC’s proposal to cut funding for the E-Rate program, which provides subsidies for broadband internet, hardware, and network security to schools and libraries. The FCC is reviewing whether the program is still necessary given increased connectivity, raising concerns that reductions could hinder infrastructure upgrades and cybersecurity. The program disbursed over $53.8 million to Long Island institutions from 2021 to 2025, supporting low-income districts and maintaining affordable internet essential for education and library services.
