Ex-Merrick pediatrician owes $1.6B in sex abuse case

A 91-year-old former pediatrician has not paid any of the $1.6 billion in sexual abuse judgments issued against him by a Nassau court, three years after the courts awarded the damages to 104 women. The lawsuits, filed under the 2019 Child Victims Act, allege he sexually abused patients from the 1960s until 2000, when his medical license was revoked. Despite efforts to recover assets, Copperman has transferred property to his wife and owns homes valued at up to $2 million, avoiding payment. Attorneys suggest courts could seize assets or jail him if he continues to refuse to pay.
