A study from the University of Graz in Austria revealed significant security vulnerabilities in data transfer applications on Android phones used by seven major companies, including Google, Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, Honor, Vivo, and Oppo. Attackers can intercept data—such as photos, messages, and contacts—during transfer processes over unencrypted Wi-Fi connections from distances reaching up to 45 meters indoors, without requiring physical access to the device. These vulnerabilities enable hackers to steal information or inject malicious software into the devices, especially during data transfers conducted in stores or mobile phone centers. Importantly, exploiting these flaws does not require expensive equipment. The study confirmed that most of the affected applications come pre-installed on over 12 billion Android devices. The companies have issued security updates to address these vulnerabilities, and users are advised to update their transfer apps and operating systems to ensure their data remains protected when upgrading their phones.
