California congressman mailed envelope with suspicious substance
A California congressional office was targeted in a nationwide wave of suspicious mailings after a staffer opened an envelope containing white powder. The incident occurred in Rep. Jimmy Panetta’s Santa Cruz office, prompting immediate response and evacuation, with medical officials clearing the staffers involved. The envelope, sent from New York and bearing similarities to other suspicious letters being investigated by federal authorities, was discarded after being torn open, and the exact return address could not be confirmed. The FBI, US Postal Inspection Service, and US Capitol Police are investigating the multiple reports of threatening and suspicious mail sent to Congress members across the country.
