Fayoum Child Marriage Prevention Gains Legal Action
The National Council for Childhood and Motherhood thwarted an attempt to marry off a 14-year-old girl informally in the Youssef El-Seddik Center in Fayoum Governorate. The council received a report indicating the girl's father intended to complete the marriage with an adult man, prompting the Child Protection Unit to immediately intervene for investigation and to ensure the child's safety. The incident was referred to the prosecutor's office, and the girl's father signed a pledge not to proceed with the marriage, with the case being continuously monitored. The report clarifies that child marriage poses a significant danger to the child, and Egyptian law prohibits the documentation of marriage contracts for anyone under 18. The council emphasizes the importance of reporting cases of children in danger to ensure their protection.
