Al Qurm Oases thrive with natural beauty
A recent study conducted by Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi, in collaboration with the Environment Agency and a French institution, reveals an extraordinary biodiversity in the environments of mangrove trees and seagrass beds along the UAE coastlines. The study includes a comprehensive assessment of marine vertebrates in Abu Dhabi using environmental DNA (eDNA) technology. The findings demonstrate that these habitats support a high diversity of fish populations, making them vital ecosystems despite rapid urban development. The research recorded 83 taxonomic groups including various species of fish, sharks, mammals, and birds. The results underscore the importance of protecting mangrove and seagrass environments as natural reserves that sustain biodiversity, highlighting that continuous monitoring is essential to ensure the sustainability of these habitats amid Abu Dhabi’s developmental challenges.
