Manous to Leave Meta and Rebrand as Independent AI Firm

Manus, the developer of general artificial intelligence agents, announced that it will resume operating as an independent company following regulatory pressures from Beijing and the United States, due to its acquisition deal which was halted by Chinese authorities. Meta had announced in December 2022 that it planned to acquire Manus for $2 billion, but China requested that the deal be called off in April 2023, leading to steps to unwind the partnership. The process currently requires some users to back up their data created after December 29, 2025, in order to comply with regulatory requirements. This comes amid Beijing's tightening of export controls on technology, amidst global competition for AI talent and data.
